What kind of firewalls/security could you have on a dedicated server? I want it to be secured to the max!

I guess cisco firewalls and intrusion detection systems are the best to provide you the maximum security, but this is your host duty to install them on your server. So, it might be one of the features to consider while choosing a provider. If you are after the max security, check serverpoint.com and rackspace.com dedicated plans.

I'm using serverpoint.coim shared plans, I think that this type of info you may get only from the host inself.

Is it important to have a firewall or is there any alternative?

Firewall is a must-have feature for a dedicated server, and a host installs it on the server, I'm sure serverpoint.com also take care of their clients and offer firewall protection. They have live chat on their site, contact them to ask about it.

That can be also something like secure VPN connection to the each VPS. I have seen that only on zipservers.com VPS offers and ir seems that not many companies pay enough attention to security related issues today.
